Generally, seaside, coastal, beach or water front resorts are
attractive tourist resorts which rely basically upon water as
its main attraction. There are lots of beaches in Akwa Ibom
State but the beautiful blue river in Ohaobu Community of
Ukanafun Local Government Area is unique. It stands out in
uniqueness to provide a very conducive environment for aquatic
games, water sporting, and boat cruising etc. when fully
developed.
It is of interest to mention that Ohaobu Community and Akpala
village of the former East Central State of Nigeria is a
confluence town where two rivers join together in separate
colours. In the 17th century, the blue river was used by the
Colonial masters as a slave route/port to carry shipload of
slaves from Akwa Ibom State and indeed the whole of Southern
Nigeria to England and America. It was from the blue river port
that king Jaja of Opobo was ferried to England on exile by the
colonial masters from Britain. The blue river served as inland
water way and sea port.
The trading partners of Obaobu Community are Egwenga people of
Ikot Abasi, Bonny people of Rivers State as well as Ogoni
people, the Ibos from Abia and Imo States. The major trading
commodities now are palm produce and sea foods. The blue river
and the Ohaobu Community need to be developed into a beautiful
tourist haven and destination in Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria.
