The primary objective of
the Ministry is the Enforcement of law and order,
administration of Justice in the State and the promotion
of good government. These laudable objectives are
achieved through the above mentioned Departments and are
further elucidated below- To achieve the above set of
objectives, the Department of Public Prosecution which
performs the constitutional role of Attorney-General
provided for S211 of the 1999 Constitution of the
Federal Republic of Nigeria.
(a) Institutes and
undertakes criminal proceedings against any person
before any court of law in the country other than a
court-martial in respect of any offence created by or
under any law of the House of Assembly.
(b) Authorizes the take
over and continuation of any such criminal proceedings
that may have been instituted by any other authority or
person; and
(c)
Authorizes discontinuance at any state before judgment
is delivered, any such criminal proceedings instituted
or undertaken by him or any other authority or person.
The Department has a duty to check societal vices and to
ensure that lawbreakers are adequately punished. It also
has as its function the duty to preserve the fundamental
rights of the citizenry by ensuring that the coercive
machinery of government is not unduly manipulated by the
powerful against the weak. The Department has the
highest number of legal personnel on the roll to carry
out the above stated duties and manages 6 out stations
offices. The Department handles an average of 600
criminal cases in all the courts of the land and
proffers legal opinion on more than 3,000 cases annually
to the Police on criminal matters. The Department of
Civil Litigation and Legal Advice, prosecutes and
defends Government in all civil matters and proffers
legal opinion to Government on any legal matter. |
