Special Education Centre for Exceptional Children

  (1)        Established in March, 1989 by the Akwa Ibom State Government under the state Ministry of Education.

  (2)        Location: Off 391 Oron Road by Ring Road 2 (Udo Udoma Avenue);

  (3)        Type: Day School – Primary and Secondary

(i)         Primary Section – 7.30am – 12.30pm

(ii)        Secondary Section – 7.30am – 2pm

  (4)        Categories of children:

            (i)         The Deaf and Dumb

            (ii)        The Mentally Retarded

            (iii)       The Blind and partially sighted

            (iv)       The learning disabled (slow learner)

   Objectives of the Centre

  The main objectives of the centre include among other;

(1)          To teach the handicapped children academic skills which will enable them compete  with their “normal” counterparts in regular schools

(2)          To teach the handicapped children vocational skills such as typewriting, shoemaking, bakery, sewing, hair-dressing etc, which will enable them earn a living without having to depend on others for their livelihood;

(3)          To carry identification programme of handicapped children in the regular school system/community and educate their teachers/parents on how to teach them properly;

(4)          To offer counseling services to parents of exceptional children;

(5)          To help children in regular primary schools who are having specific learning problems like in Mathematics Calculations, English, Writing, Reading etc overcome their learning difficulties.

   Staff Strength

The centre has the following staff:

1.          The Principal – B. Sc. M. Ed in Special Education;

2.        The Vice Principal – NCE (special Edu.)  E. Ed. Guidance and Counseling;

3.        Two (2) Teachers with B. Ed. In Education including Technical Education;

4.         Three (3) Teachers with B. Sc.

5.          Six (6) Teachers with N.C.E. in Special Education

6.          One (1) Blind teacher with N.C.E. in special Education

7.         One (1) Blind Instructor with Federal Vocational Proficiency Certificate and Advance G.C.E.

8.          One (1) Deaf teacher – with Teacher Grade II

9.          One (1) Deaf Messenger

10.       Two physically handicapped instructors with trade test in Handicrafts

11.        Six (6) non- academic staff

  Tuition:           The tuition is free

  Funding:

The school is funded by the Akwa Ibom State Government through the State Ministry of Education

  Learning Materials/Equipment:

Teaching and learning materials/equipment are provided to the centre by the State Ministry of education and ETF (Education Tax Fund)

Foreign aid Unit HIV/AIDS Activities (2001 – 2004)

1.            Sensitization of the policy makers and management staff in the education sub-sector on HIV/AIDS prevention and mitigation – November, 2001;

2.            Advocacy/Training - Primary/Secondary School heads on HIV/HIVS basic facts. Year 2002.

3.             Training of peer educators in upper Primary and Secondary Schools at 3 Senatorial District and formation of anti Aids clubs in school. Year 2003.

4.            Training of handicapped peer educator and formation of Anti Aids Clubs for the handicapped in 3 senatorial districts of the State. Year 2003

5.            Advocacy meeting with top management and governing boards of tertiary institutions with a view of getting them to institute and enforce strict regulations against sexual harassment.
