Current/On
going Projects:
1.
First socio-economic survey of Akwa Ibom State:
Work has commenced on the
first-ever socio-economic survey of Akwa Ibom State. The
survey is essentially a labour market study using the
household. It is intended to generate primary data for
macro-economic planning in areas of
employment/unemployment, household characteristics, income
structure, credit accessibility, health profile,
expenditure patterns, literacy level, etc. as well as
establishing a computerized labour market information
system.
2
State Economic Summit/Donor Conference:.
A State economic
Summit/Donor Conference that will bring all the
stakeholders – policy makers, Organized Private Sector,
the organized labour, NGOs, development partners is being
planned for this year.
3.
AK-LEEDS:
In line with the national
planning framework, the Ministry in association with the
various Local Governments will soon commence the
production of the Akwa Ibom Local Economic Empowerment and
Development Strategy (AK-LEEDS).
4.
New Job Creation Initiative:
The Ministry is initiating a
drive for the integration of skills acquisition and work
experience for the people, using the on-going massive
construction projects – roads, housing, water supply, etc.
Under this scheme, akin to the ILO paradigm, labour
intensive techniques would be adopted in all major
construction projects to generate employment and skills
acquisition opportunities, as well as work experience on
pupilage.
5.
Integrated Community Development Project (ICDP):
This is a community based
integrated development and skill acquisition programme to
be funded jointly by the government, communities and
development partner. It emphasizes the acquisition
of multiple skills – agriculture, agro-allied industry and
services for self-reliance. Essentially, the project is to
generate economic growth centres in the various
communities of the State, and executed as demonstration
programmes.
7.
Institution Building: Key
statutory bodies have been established to ensure the
coordination of development process in the State and
ensure continuous monitoring of process viz.: State
project Review and Implementation Committee – (chaired by
His Excellency), Ministerial /Agency Implementation
committee and Local Government project Review Board;
8.
Renewal of planning consciousness:
Every Ministry/Local Government Area in the State and
every tier of government has come to accept the imperative
of “planning” not as an abstract but reality. The existing
gap in the executive capacity to plan has been exposed.
All these have come in the course of preparing the State
2004 – 2006 Rolling plan anchored by the Ministry.
Besides, the Ministry is represented in every key
committee in the State that is charged with development
mandates; for the purpose of coordination or linkages.
