Objectives of the Judiciary
  1. To fulfill its constitutional functions of interpreting laws and adjudicating in criminal and civil causes brought before Courts by Government, Corporate Bodies and individuals.

  2. To co-operate and work in harmony with the Executive and Legislative Arms of Government.

  3. At the request of the executive arm of government, to release a   judicial officer or Magistrate to chair a Commission or panel of  inquiry set up by government

Responsibilities/Programmes of the Judiciary

  1. Ensures that the seat of the Head of the Judiciary "State of Chief Judge" is always occupied.

  2. Provides leadership to the Judicial Service Commission.

  3. Ensures that the seat of the Chief Registrar is always occupied.

  4. Ensures that the Judicial Divisions are headed by Administrative Judges.

  5. Ensures that functional Court Registries exist for proper and smooth administration of justice at all levels.

  6. Maintains a responsive Judiciary’ Headquarters for proper and effective co-ordination and supervision of stall in the Judicial Divisions, Magisterial Districts and Customary Court Areas

  7. Establishes new Judicial Divisions, Magisterial Districts and Customary Court Areas in a deliberate attempt to bring justice to the door-steps of all people.

  8. Ensures that annual budgets are submitted to the Executive Arm of Government.

  9. Ensures that Lawyers of proven integrity are recommended for appointment as High Court Judges and Magistrates.

  10. Ensures that Presidents and Members are appointed into the Customary Courts.

  11. Maintains a strong link with the National Judicial Council and other Judiciaries in the Country for the formation and implementation of National Judicial Policies.

  12. Ensures that befitting official and residential accommodations are made available to create a conducive atmosphere for smooth performance of Judicial functions.

  13. Ensures that men and materials are always in place for proper administration of Justice

  14. Performs the swearing-in of newly elected Governor and Chairmen of Local Government Areas, including newly appointed Magistrates and Presidents and Members of Customary Courts.

  15. Opens New Legal Year as an annual event.

  16. Performs official opening of new Judicial Divisions and Magisterial Districts.

  17. Organizes Quarterly General Prayers for all staff of the Judiciary under the auspices of the Judiciary Prays Committee.

     18. Participates at:

             (a) International Jurists Workshops and Seminars.

             (b) All Nigeria Judges Conference.

             (c) National Judicial Council Meetings.

             (d) Body of Benches Meeting.

             (e) National Judicial Institute’s Meetings.

19. Undertakes staff training for High Level, Middle Level and lower level manpower.

20. Serves as a reservoir of resource persons for Government and Corporate Bodies.

Curent Projects

1.   Renovation of dilapidated court buildings (State-wide)

2.  Renovation of Judges/Magistrates’ Quarters

3.  Computerization of Judges Chambers.

4.  Procurement of relevant Law books for use by Judges and

      Magistrates.

5.  Electrification of High Courts through the provision of stand-by

      generators.

6.  Landscaping and face-lifting the present Judiciary Headquarters.

Potential Investments

1. Establishment of Fuel Depot/Motor Mechanical Workshop.

2. Standard Staff Canteen

3. Launching a News Bulletin.

4. Encouraging the staff to establish a functional co-operative society

The Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State

 It is with utmost gratitude to God and immeasurable joy that I stand before you today as your Executive Governor. On behalf of my wife, your first lady; my entire family, my deputy and his dear wife, I thank you, my people, for voting en masse for PDP in the general elections of April 14 and 21/26/2007. I salute your maturity, courage and peaceful disposition during and after the elections. I salute you for reposing your confidence in me right from the primaries of December 14, 2006 and bringing it to a climax on April 14, 2007. I assure you that your decision shall never be in vain. Today, we celebrate our self-worth as a people and our ability to strengthen democratic ideals by voting according to our conscience. We have taken the right step in our march towards a glorious future.

 

Fellow citizens, this is a new era signifying a renewal and symbolizing an end as well as a beginning. Above all, we are witnessing, not just the beginning of another chapter of history but beholding the actualization of God’s will in Akwa Ibom State.
